Mark Benson – Polypipe

My working life began in May 1997, as an apprentice toolmaker at Mason Pinder on Polypipe`s Thorne site. This turned out to be the making of me, offering a sound education centered around the career I had chosen, and offering me personal support along the way.

It was an opportunity to learn on the job, and to learn to respect the experience of my peers who were passing on their knowledge daily.

My 4 year apprenticeship gave me an excellent Engineering background, spending periods of time in each different department within the company. Once time served, I became a fully trained toolmaker, working on the manufacture & repair of injection mould tooling.

After my apprenticeship had ended I continued to be trained in house in other disciplines within the company, and after several periods of restructuring I became head of the EDM department, being solely responsible for all Electro Discharge Machining & programming at MP.

I continued to develop personally & professionally, with Polypipe constantly investing in my skill set, and became an integrated member of the design and programming team, working on CAD CAM activities.

In 2013 this culminated in heading up a new department servicing Plant repairs/Extrusion modifications, predominantly for the Neale Road site, from within Mason Pinder. Alongside my existing responsibilities as head of EDM, I also visited sites within group to offer technical solutions and repairs for bespoke projects. I would be required to design, program & oversee the manufacturing process of these projects.

In early 2016 I was offered the opportunity to become part of the Polypipe Leadership Development Program, again giving me the chance to develop personally & professionally. The skills I received during this program were tailored to suit the business needs, but have also given me a fresh outlook on how to apply myself in different areas of my working life.

After 19 years loyal service at Mason Pinder, I was given the opportunity to Join Polypipe who gave me the chance to step into management within the group and I was successful within my application for the post of Assistant Maintenance Manager at Neale Road.
